This will be an on-going conversation regarding ZMAX GPS/GSM:

skip,

have you guys ever been able to get the ZMAX with a GSM module module to obtain RTK corrections from an NTRIP caster? I have been unsuccessful in getting mine to work and am pinging any mind knowledgeable on the ZMAX system for help/pointers/tips etc.

I had some port problem issues when trying to connect to the US Army Corps system because theirs wants to assign a port number automatically and the Carlson survce software does not seem to like to leave the port number blank. It allows me to connect for about 3 minutes and then drops me. I am trying to get them to give me a fixed port number but with no success.

I tried a commercial NTRIP on a temp basis, but when I go to select the mount point and hit accept, I get dropped because it says that I am not sending rover position even though I have this checked int eh software and have send PASHS commands to tell the received to send it. I get some error about a null point something or other for a radio driver? Old firmware on my ZMAX system??? Last I checked with guys at Sidwell, they said I had the most recent version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

J

Jack, it's been a while and I'm not at the office right now to check my notes but I believe you have to use like port 6 or 9, a little down the chart from normal. Did you go to http://carlsonsw.com and under support , got to knowledge base and search for ZMax GSM. I do have a flow chart for setting it up, I'll look for it and get back to you.

S,

thanks. I did see that document and have followed it. I was finally able to get into the dicarlo network yesterday and log data for about 10 minutes. Feeling confident, I shut everything down. Wanting to make sure it was not a fluke I tried againa few hours later and after getting into the network, I was dropped about 10 s later. I tried and re-tried and kept getting dropped out....meaning, I would get an green RTK light and then a few seconds later, all lights but satellite would go blank and the received green would go back to SYSINFO and then say no data card detected.

I'll tell you with those ZMax, the connections are everything. Keep your connections clean, and be easy but firm when connecting batteries, and other modules, even cables. With that it sounds to me like you lost power???? You can lose your GSM signal almost as fast as your phone hangs up. Check signal strength in the area. I'm trying to find you the ZMax .Net CD, it has a load of info on it. I'll gt back in a little while

S,

yep, we have the pac crest and always switch it to high. I just bought an RF scanner from rad shack last week for the next time we go out to test just in case. I have mine on freqs in the 461 MHzish range and I did get the license from FCC. I do not know what a bottle rocket PDL is, is that the RF adapter? So, I can use the freq button on the pac crest to scan for the channel that gives me the "best" frequency for communicating with the rover? I will have to try that.

FYI, I also checked 3G coverage via ATT and the whole state of Delaware is in the covered category. I never have problems with my phone so did not anticipate problems using the sim card for data

OK losing signal with the radio, yes it is real possible that someone is stepping on you. If you don't have your on freq.s from FCC, then what comes with it are itenate? common everyday. I bought 3 scanners from radio shack for us trouble shooting, identifying which freq is clean will make all the difference in a good or bead day od GPS. If the base has a 35watt pacific crest and the rover has a bottle rocket PDL. The you can hold down freq button until you get the one that scans the channels for you and picks the best one (it's about 70% accurate) The other thing on the back of the 35watt is a high and low switch.

hey I'm going to jump over a get you approved on LSU, then copy and past this data over
...if that's not easy to just cut and paste, I'll send Justin a link and a updaye.
talk to you them

Jack, this reply is giving me a fit. I did reply about over one hour ago. Is that time of the day the phone ringing off the hook or ear. Crazy thing happened after i talked to you. Ref Bagley from southwest Missouri called me , he is having the same problem. So Ref was going to look for the ZMax .net CD I sent him, if hr fines it he is going to upload the quick start guide, so we can trouble shoot. I am going to attach a link or something that will direct you to another document, has a little GNSS info and lots of other good stuff. Mean while I don't have a different direct answer, Ref will probably jump on here in a minute, he is having the same problem.
I'm going to continue looking for the CD. I'll check back in a bit.

Both of these have information about setting up the GSM, just google ZMax.net GSM and we have all kinds of stuff posted in Scribe and Blogger.
