It's the best way to learn in my opinion. I learned everything I know from some great surveyors. I hope you have the same opportunity, though the amount of building you are doing will definitely give you some hard earned experience :)

It's my pleasure to help knowledge-hungry surveyors :) My type of surveying? Hmmm, I guess I've done a little of most fields, the two I haven't had the pleasure of are Hydrographic and Cadastral. But mainly I do a lot of boundary surveying and cons…

Wow, you have a lot going on for only being in the business for 7 weeks. Have you gone to college for Surveying already? Calculating volumes can be tedious even for a seasoned pro, especially when they're anything but square. Software nowadays will…

What island? Some books are related to region or nation, not to mention what form of measurement ... metric or feet? Are you searching for practices and principals or possibly starting off with a book on calculations and procedures? What kind of sur…

Polk County mainly, though I've surveyed all over Florida from north to south, east to west ... and some in Texas; the DFW area and Wichita Falls. My T-1 got a "piggy-back" EDM after about a year of using it, I really thought it was the cat's meow!…

I don't know of I can consider one person as a mentor, as I've learned from a lot of good people. But two probably rise to the top as far as fundamentals, practices and principals; Joe Bibler and Mark Porter. Both are LS's, Joe was the first surveyo…

What type of surveying are you involved with?
Mostly all, the only field I have no experience in is Hydrographic. I have extensive construction and boundary experience.
How long have you been surveying?
16 years
Tell the group a little about yourself or what you specialize in:
I've been surveying for 15 years in the central Florida area and 1 year in Texas. The first years of my career were defined in the swamps of the Green Swamp area with a T-1 and chain breaking down sections the old fashioned way before finally getting a "piggy-back" EDM in '95. My first calculator was an HP-11c, then to the 48GX in 95. Since then I have grown into more advanced instruments and GPS of all kinds and have grown into an unlicensed office position doing everything a licensed surveyor does except sign the surveys. The past 5 years have been mainly construction of roads, bridges, and working for Universal Studios or Disney building roller coasters and working on Sets for Universal. The last roller coaster I was a part of was Expedition Everest in Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Yeah, Avid laid off the whole survey department. Except the guy who took my place, he is working 2 weeks a month, last I heard. I left on my own, not thinking it would be that hard to find a job, boy was I wrong, G. White quit and left the whole thing to me, only I had no say in any business matters so it was tough. Sean Driscoll got me a job up here in Missouri working on a huge dam for the utility company. Yeah, I didnt know you were a fellow buckeye! Small world! I tried to get work in Texas as I lived there as a kid, actually Texas is where I got my first taste of surveying, I would go out on weekends with my best friend and his dad, who was a surveyor, and we would help him chain distances.
I stumbled on this site accidentally while looking for future survey work. The job I am on now is suppose to be done in 7 more months, they said they would use me on the next one if I was interested, but I am not sure about that, not sure where it will be, miss the family as I am up here on my own.
Yeah its tough selling houses right now, I am trying to save mine, dont know how much longer we can hang on to it.
Keep in touch

Chris,

How are you doing? Haven't seen you in some time. Hope all is well, any luck finding work in FLA? I too had to leave FLA to find work.
I am currently working as a party chief on a large project in Missouri.
Last I heard you working with Shawn M. doing scanning work.
Hope to talk again soon.
